Illalangi - a Must see in the Riverland
We recommend that all our guests stop at Illalangi which is a family-owned and run, grower, producer and providore based at Waikerie, selling and supporting a range of locally produced gourmet artisan products including giftware to showcase and to celebrate their passion for the region and premium clean green produce. In their small onsite kitchen, dukkah, olive oil, olives, chutneys and relishes are created. Their passion for local and ethical produces has the store filled with organic lamb, SA Cheese, sun dried fruit and other delicious treats.
John and Keryn established Illalangi in 2010 and have a similar history to proprietors Rick and Cathy, who are passionate local growers looking at “Changing the way people see the Riverland”. At the forefront of their business is showcasing the premium produce in the region while promoting the mighty Murray. Adding to this, John and Keryn are big advocates for zero waste and are working towards a sustainable future for their business, which aligns with The Frames sustainability and Eco ratings.
Most people are unaware that the Riverland is one the biggest food bowls in Australia, and fed by water supply from the mighty Murray, along with well-drained soils, there is nothing the area can’t grow. In fact the Riverland is the largest wine growing area in Australia!
The Riverland wine region has primarily been focused on export compared to the other renowned wine regions. Unfortunately, this has resulted in the Riverland not receiving the coverage and exposure for wine production that it so greatly deserves. However, we are beginning to see change in this area, and wine connoisseurs and food critics alike are beginning to understand that our region can also grow high quality award winning wine along with citrus, almonds & nuts, fresh fruit, avocados as well as dry land farming.
We are so fortunate in the Riverland to partner with such amazing local and emerging producers all working towards a common goal with a passion for the region. Here at The Frames we cannot recommend Illalangi highly enough to guests, and like The Frames, these guys offer more than just the amazing providore that packs their shelves. It’s not only the warm Riverland hospitality, free tastings and bush tucker interpretive gardens that makes Illalangi a standout, but the experience and learning’s one takes away simply from walking through the front door.
Illalangi is a great place to collect items fof a gourmet picnic or stop on your way back to Adelaide to fill your pantry at home with delicious souvenirs. So do yourself a ‘flavour’ and make sure you put this little gem on your list when visiting our outstanding region!
